The Nederlands started with pressure. Taeka Taekema always tried to flick the ball to the front, but the strikers couldn’t handle it. Timme Hoyng made a great game on the left hand site; he was responsible for trouble in the South African defensive. He got his first chance in minute 10 after a great pass by Teun de Nooijer but his stroke went over the goal. Although the Dutch kept the pressure going, they had little technical problems in their attack. They got a lot of chances, but they didn’t profit out from it.
When they got three penalty corners in four minutes, Taekema scored. Now the Netherlands were in front with 1:0 and increased the pressure on the circle. South Africa wasn’t able any more to leave their half of the pitch. However the Oranjes missed to improve the result. After great saves by the goalkeeper Chris Hibbert, his team started to play more offensive again.

From minute 40 to 65 the South Africans became better and got chances, but keeper Guus Vogels denied all possibilities to score by Ian Symons and Brett Tucker. Then, five minutes before the end of the game the Dutch Geert-Jan Deriks made the 2:0 after a good preparatory work of Teun de Nooijer. Now, the South Africans gave up fighting. The last chance for the Nederlands had Floris Evers, but he missed the goal.
Despite the defeat the coach Paul Revington was satisfied with the South African game. Especially he liked the pressure which was applied by his partly inexperienced men. Roelant Oltmans made clear the Netherlands could have won easier, but they decided to go the difficult way. Moreover he reminded that his guys used only one out of nine penalty corners.
